Fact #1
These facts are word for word.
The marathon is one of the marquee events of the games. People will do almost everything to win. In 1904, Fred Lorz crossed the finish line in St. Louis first. He was given a laurel wreath to celebrate. Guilt soon won out, and Lorz admitted the truth. He had developed cramps a few kilometres into the race, so he jumped into a car and hitched a ride most of the way. He figured it would be funny to jump out near the finish and win. The officials didn't share his sense of humour. They stripped him of the win and awarded the victory to Thomas Hicks of the U.S., who'd actually won the race.
